Step back in time as we head out to the Union Chapel Mine on Saturday, September 11 to have our very own fossil hunt! The Fresh Air Family team will be there to help you hunt and to explain what we dig up.
The cost is $20 for adults, $10 for children (not recommended for under age five due to rough terrain). We will also grab lunch at Green Top BBQ afterwards. Vans leave Trinity Oxmoor at 9:15 am, or meet at 10:00 am at the Walmart parking lot in Sumiton (690 West Highway 78).
Union Chapel Mine is considered one of the top three Coal Age Fossil sites in the world. Fossils are easy to find – a five-year-old found a museum-quality piece this spring. The site has been recently turned, showing a new layer of tracks. It has been visited by scientists from around the world. This event is led by Carl Sloan, Fresh Air Family’s paleontologist. There will be a presentation about the site, what to look for, and how to find fossils. The Fresh Air Family team will be there to help you hunt and to explain what you found. Wear long pants and good shoes as it is rough terrain. You will need a small hammer and a screw driver to separate rocks. Bring a box (bucket not recommended) with newspaper or wrappings to take home your delicate finds. Sunscreen and water are essential. Slippery conditions or rain will cancel this event.
