In the United Methodist Church, pastors are “sent” not “called” to a local church. When we are ordained, we vow to go where we are sent. The Bishop and District Superintendents are charged with the responsibility of ascertaining the needs of local churches and, to the best of their ability, appointing pastors that meet those needs. These appointments are typically for one year at a time.
At Trinity there are four of us who serve as pastors under appointment. Three of us will return for another year. I am beginning my sixteenth year at Trinity. Suzanne Pruitt is beginning her eighth year, and Drew Holland is beginning his third year.
Dave Barnhart has been appointed to begin a new church in the Birmingham area with Trinity’s support. He, Angela and Leo, have become such a vital part of our church. Dave has done great ministry here that will continue to bless us. We are proud to have a part in the great work that God now has for him to do in beginning a new congregation. Please keep them in your prayers. There is a reception honoring the Barnharts this Sunday, June 10 from 4-6 PM in the Fellowship Hall.
Nathan Carden has been appointed to serve as our new associate. Nathan has served as the Associate Pastor at the Pell City First United Methodist Church for the past two years and has done an excellent job. We are looking forward to the gifts he will bring us. His first Sunday at Trinity will be June 17.
I am honored to be able to return to Trinity for another year. Our daughter who just graduated from Law School was in the fifth grade when we moved here. Our son, who is completing his residency and moving back here in July, was a freshman in high school. These have been rich and rewarding years for us. We thank you for your support and covet your continued prayers as together we do the work of Christ in this place.
I know I speak for all of the pastoral staff in saying that we count it a privilege to share with you the ministry of this church. Trinity is special. You are special. Thank you for allowing God to use you for his great purposes. We look forward to a wonderful year of ministry.
